Evaluation Report September 09 – September 10

The objectives of the association are to:

·        support local coordinators and others involved in Neighbourhood Watch

·        help recruit new members and establish new schemes

·        liaise with the police

This third report reflects on progress made on these objectives and to look to future work planned or required to further achieve our objectives.

Support local coordinators and others involved in neigbourhood watch

Progress this year

1.      Following the cancellation of last year’s coordinators meeting, a survey was conducted asking if the meeting was of value and when and where would suit most people. The response was good and encouraged us to run a meeting this year.

2.      The coordinators’ meeting was very successful this year, with the theme of home security. 30 coordinators attended and, led by PCSO Lizzie Sword-Daniels, there was a lively discussion on home security issues based on looking at photographs of houses and identifying the ways in which security could be improved.

3.      The newsletter has been produced on a regular basis with a variety of topics covered. We are grateful to the police for funding this and the Lewes Crime Reduction Partnership for assistance in producing the newsletter.

4.      We produced a handbook for members and distributed over 4500. This was funded by the Lewes Crime Reduction Partnership. Feedback has been very positive.

5.      Given we are not publicly funded, and rely on donations, grants and support from others, we were delighted that Waitrose chose us as one of their local organizations to support through their community fund. People placed their green tokens in the boxes and we received £159, which will help us defray the cost of future coordinators’ meetings, printing and other expenses.

6.      Gwyneth Watkinson left the committee due to other commitments. We thank her for her contribution over the years

Help recruit new members and establish new schemes

Progress this year

1.      The association had a stand at the Lewes Societies Fair on 17 July 2010 which was successful in meeting people and recruiting new members

2.      During the year we canvassed houses where the coordinator had retired or moved. As a result we successfully replaced these coordinators and created new schemes

3.      Looking back over the 5 years the Association has been active we see the following figures. The gap for 2006 is because we did not record things properly that year but the figures are somewhere between 2005 and 2007. We now have 196 coordinator covering 4846 houses.

4.      We have had a regular slot in Lewes News for Neighbourhood Watch for the past three years

Further work

1.      Identify areas in the district which need further support to recruit members and coordinators

Liaise with the police

Progress this year

1.      The search team was called out on four days and attended two exercises this year. Due to some retirements and resignations our numbers have fallen to 82, so a recruitment leaflet was circulated in July. Hopefully we shall have sufficient numbers of new volunteers to enable more training to take place later on.

2.      Sergeant Richard Bates joined the committee and provides a valuable link to the police.

Further work

1.      The association needs to continue to work with PCSOs to keep coordinators involved and informed of local issues
